Hi, My son attends the STAR program (a Headstart Program) here in Peoria. His birthday is August 30 (5:40 pm/was due Sept 4 but I was induced) and he will be 5 this next birthday. I have been told that he can not attend the STAR program next year because he had turned 5 before September 1st and that I either pay for private preschool or send him to Kindergarten. (We qualify for free lunch and can not afford private preschool which is one of the qualifiers for the Head Start program.) My son's STAR teachers (who are also trying to find a way to keep him there - a place and teachers he knows...) and his pediatrician agree that he should have another year of preschool and not be sent to Kindergarten (emotional/social development issues). I have been told that there is flexibility for allowing children into Kindergarten when their birthdays fall into the first week of September. Why then isn't there the flexibility for a child whose birthday falls the day before the cut-off to allow them to have the benefit of the Head Start program. I would like to learn more about these policies and make my appeal to the proper authorities. It seems incredulous that my son's development and readiness is irrelevant. I feel disappointed in the system that I am in this predicament. I am certain that sending my son to Kindergarten this next fall would be detrimental to his potential and as I'd said his teacher's agree. I can't afford private preschool, so that isn't an option. I have been told that I could send him to Kindergarten for only 1/2 the day and then have him repeat Kindergarten full-time the following year, but that too seems potentially harmful. Holding a child back in any grade creates a stigma and has a high probability of affecting them negatively. I would like to know 1)is the Sept 1 a STRICT policy (as it isn't for Kindergarten) in the Head Start Program, 2)Who do I appeal my case too.

Stimelings - each Head Start has their own schedule so there is no "master" calendar for all Head Starts. Please check with your local Head Start site for their annual calendar.

For job postings, we currently do not have any information however if you let me know which county you are from I can give you the contact information for your local Head Start Grantee which you can call to see if there are position openings.

Thanks.

As a nutritionist with a local HeadStart center I was wondering if other centers in the state are considering using 1% milk for children over 2. Some centers in other states are going from 2% to 1% milk? Are any in Illinois considering this?

Since young brains need some fat for proper development, we will continue to use 2% milk in our program. CACFP does not require any certain fat percentage. At Head Start we already serve meals with low fat, sugar and salt content.

When a Head Start agency has a collaboration agreement with an ISBE school and classrooms are located within that school, are the transportation services provided under Head Start guidelines to be implemented as relates to Child Restraint systems? Example. the Head Start classroom joins the district on a field trip using the district school bus which does not contain child restraints.
